From what I understand it's not the amount of CO2 and other pollutants that's the issue. It's where it's created. In the high atmosphere, pollutants have a longer life since there are no plants to photosynthesize the gases.

Aside from the very important pollution issue, yes we should definitely fly less. Its fine if you really are in a hurry and have to be somewhere for some purpose.... but in the modern day global society the whole thing seems to be "get there and get there fast".... I feel so many people are missing the "gettb]b[uING[/u][/b[/b]] there" part.

The journey itself is as valuable a part of the travelling experience as anything else. It gives you a great opportunity to get into the "here and now" consciousness... Of course you can reach that in many other ways but faced with god knows how many hours on a rattling bus in Baluchistan, it was almost essential for remaining sane What might have been a nightmare journey became something else entirely for me. I managed to stretch this out for the 16 days it took me to reach the UK too. A valuable lesson for me. I loved the journey itself. When I was back my Dad asked why I didn't just fly. But I would have missed so much in doing so.

Stay on the ground as long as possible.... Enjoy the journey... Remember why you want to travel

Great thread!

One note: I think it is British Airlines is (or has already) developing a program whereby a person can tack on a few more dollars (or pounds as it would be) which will go to a project to offset the carbon emitions.

As far as travelling less, I have been thinking about this for quite awhile, and perhaps it is more than just the ecological damage that we cause, but also the mental.

Consider this: I think a lot - if not most - people travel with a deep down seeded feeling that someday they will find that "Perfect Place". That ultimate place to take a photo to show their friends that never leave their home town. To find a better place, perhaps because they do not feel complete... perhaps they think something is missing from their lives?

I used to travel a lot, I also used to move around a lot. I was always unsatisfied with where I was. Don't get me wrong, I always found the new place to be great and exciting but as time wore on I would slowly become tired and think of the next place I wanted to go.

Now am seeing more that every city - when it comes down to it - is the same. That it is not necessarily where you are, but what state your mind is in, and in some respects who you are with.

In the end, yes, we should travel less - as far as the selfish travel in pursuit of the unattainable. I am sure if one was to walk down the street they are on right now, find a small grassy or wooded hill and just sit, and enjoy, you will have a travel experience of a lifetime.

Peace Out.

What do you mean "let's go back to trains an boats"? I can't really go back to what I've never left. But I agree completely, it's a heck of allot more fun. Whay do you think i've never bothered flying to begin with?!

Rich, killing a 9hr gap in his 5night Saigon - Shanghai train trip...
