Hi, I was in turkey last august - such a cool country, you'll have an awesome time - and paid between £6-£10 pernight for hostels. Quite nice ones too.
Have a good time

I was in Istanbul about four years ago and we (my boyfriend and I) were approached at the train station by some guy offering us accomodation for GBP6 each per night. I was very wary at first but seeing as it was really late and we hadn't got any accomodation sorted we decided to chance it. Anyway, we ended up staying at this amazing hotel with ensuite bathroom, tv, mini-bar, right in the centre of the city. It was fantastic and the guy that took us there made sure we were only billed what he had quoted us (on the price list outside the hotel it was double as much!)Apparently his uncle owned the p[lace and because there were some rooms not taken, the guy was trying to drum up business at the station. So, although I wouldn't really recommend just following a random guy in the middle of the night from the train station, it is worth just chatting to a few people once you arrive to see what they can offer you.

tallbird's got it right-people will approach you right away. Just be sure to check the place out before agreeing to anything (check the plumbing, bedding, locks, etc) Everything in Turkey works pretty much on who you know, use it. Taksim area is pricey and very not Turkish. The Sultanahment area is where most of your major landmarks will be (Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, etc) if you want proximity. I usually stay in the Laleli area, still within walking distance, but not so touristy. And if you get lazy, a taxi should only cost about 8-14 TL from Taksim. Expect to pay 20-50 TL a nite for a decent place.
