Hi
Am going on honeymoon to Bali and Lombok in May. We're going to be travelling around independently so will book places to stay when we're there.
However I want to book the first couple of nights accomm beforehand. Am thinking of heading to Ubud first so does anyone have any suggestions?
We'd like to avoid the really upmarket resort style places but are happy spending around US$50-60 a night for a room if need be. Basically looking for interesting places to stay, not too big, with a genuine local feel.
Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike
I cant help with Bali but I am based in Lombok (though in UK for a few months at mo)
Have you decided where in Lombok you want to base yourself or will you travel around the island?
Senggigi is the main resort but for me it is a bit souless. My favourite is Kuta (not to be compared to Kuta Bali!) where I am. We have stunning white sand beaches (Senggigi is brown, volcanic sand) & much less tourists & development. I wold recommend Novotel for a honeymoon but as you say you want to avoid the resort type places maybe Kuta Indah which is midrange. I also have a homestay but we are at the lower end of the price range.
There is plenty to see & do in Lombok so if you have any more questions please just ask.
Gemma

Try this link
There are Komaneka (>$100) and Pande Permai (+/- $30)
They are located in the heart of Ubud, along Monkey Forest Street (which is where the Monkey Forest is) where there are accommodations, restaurants and shops.
Happy travels!

Hey Mikey, if you want somewhere quirky and unique, Matahari Cottages in Ubud is the perfect place for you. My friend stayed there last month, and he couldn't find enough words of praise for the place! They have 6 themed rooms, with prices starting from US$25/room. There's no air-con, but the rate includes a unique breakfast (complete with poem of the day!) and high-tea (high tea itself costs 60,000rp per person, so the room rate is really a bargain). The staff are wondefully warm and lovely (as are all the Balinese), and it's a 10 minute walk from the main Ubud town area. I'd stay there myself if my husband wasn't such a fan of the sea and surf (we always stay in Kuta because we love the beach). Check it out at: matahariubud.com
I've not stayed in Lombok, but I've stayed at Gili Trawangan (tiny island off Lombok). It's the perfect place to snorkel and get away from it all (no motor vehicles allowed on the island, only bicycles and horsecarts). Lovely place to relax and talk to the locals. I agree with mimpimanis that Senggigi is not that great, kinda soulless just like she said

Anom Cottages in Ubud was great, very local feel, nice staff, a little out of the city(5 min by car) but the staff will drive you and pick you up. The ultimate place in Lombok is Quinci Villas.
Both places have websites.
