Hi! I'm leaving for south america in 2 weeks. I'm doing a tour with "Budget Expeditions", starting in Santiago and have been told that i need to pay the local payment ($500) on the first day in dollars. I am unwilling to take the dollars with me from the UK as i'm travelling round Brazil and Argentina first so it would be too risky. Can anyone advise me as to the best way for me to obtain Dollars whilst in Santiago? Cheers! Ali

Hello Ali,

Go to a bank, there are plenty of them in Santiago. We had no trouble at all exchanging for US dollars at Scotiabank.

Best of luck and stay safe,
Belize Me

Another option is to get your USD in Argentina right before you arrive in Chile. Many ATMs give you the option of withdrawing money from your home bank ATM card in Argentine pesos or USD. There are ATMs in Santiago that dispense USD in place of Chilean pesos as well, though I don't recall which banks in particular. Finally, as Belize Me indicated, you can always make an exchange at a bank.
