If you shop and-or watch the specials, airfare between NYC and LAS is often less than Amtrak fares.

Hi . . . not done this myself but there are options for you to explore.

Option One: I suggest you investigate Greyhound buses ( . . .relatively cheap and there is a bus which goes from NYC to Las Vegas (takes over 2 days). I am sure you will then be able to find a connecting bus or something to get you to the Grand Canyon. Hopefully though a US resident will be able to advise?!!;)

Other possibilities are train? The train site is, and although you cannot go direct there are possible routes for you to explore.

And there is also flying? Have you looked into some of the airlines?

Good luck!

The bus would get you there and is rather cheap. But if you are not real short of money, take the train and you will have a wonderful eye filling ride in reasonable comfort across America. There is more than one train from New York to Chicago ( more than one route ) and there you would change trains to the Southwest Limited, which will take you to Flagstaff or Williams, Arizona, not far from the Canyon. The coach ( chair car ) fares are fairly reasonable, but forget taking a sleeping car unless you have lots of money, which you probably do not. Send me a message if you have more questions.

The train is a better way to travel. A bus in the USA is not the most pleasant or enjoyable way to travel. They also take a tremendous amount of time. It begins to feel like they stop every few miles and if you are next to a screaming kid (highly likely) you are stuck with them as far as you both ride! The condition of the bus (I would not qualify them as the coach used in Europe) is a whole other matter. Could be a new one, but probably not.

I would encourage the train option. It still offers the view, but is quicker and you can always change cars if there is an overly obnoxious child, or adult for that matter.

It might even be worth checking the price of an plane ticket on AmericanWest Airlines, they are based out of Arizona. Delta has a hub in Salt Lake City, Utah. United uses Denver, Colorado and American uses Dallas, Texas. You might check for web saver special to one of their hubs and take a train the rest of the way. Keep in mind there are three very large airports in close proximity to New York City: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark. Once you are in NYC, any could be easily accessed. Oh yeah! JetBlue is based out of JFK and is a lowcost air carrier with only new planes. Very reasonably priced and supposed to offer very good customer service. Another lowcost carrier is AirTran and they use Newark as a hub. Spirit Airlines I know very little about, but they are another lowcost carrier. Sometime airfares are comprable in price to bus or train.

Anyway, I hope you have a great trip! I will be leaving USA for Dubrovnik via Rome in late May. I have heard such wonderful things about your country and everyone I have contacted for info in Croatia has been most helpful and friendly. Hopefully you will encounter such kind people here!

Let us all know how it goes!!

I travelled from Flagstaff(near Grand Canyon) to NYC in September last year on the Greyhound. My friend and i spent a month travelling around america and had to get back to NYC from the grand canyon. We did it non stop(2 and a half days), but if you have a bit of time, you could travel overnight so far, explore whatever place for the day, then get back on the greyhound at night and travel a bit more, etc. It breaks the trip up a bit, and you see slightly more than the view from the window.
