We went to Ireland, starting by St Paddy's in Dublin for three days, and rented a car from there. We drove to Galway ( about 3 hrs) and spent the night, explored the town that night, then drove south. We did the Dingle Peninsula, Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Limerick, Cork, Killarney, the Blarney Castle, Kilkenny, and back to Dublin, all within 6 days. The drive was very doable, with no more than 5 hours a day in the car, max, including driving the Ring of Kerry. But a rental car was a must, or you'll spend have your day waiting for the right bus to come...

And by the way, our rental car was a wreck when we got it. It was missing a hubcab, the antennae was broken off, and the left (passenger) side was completely scratched in multiple places. Of course, once we got on those narrow Irish roads with the bushes hanging over the lane, scraping against your car, we were glad that it was already a mess, and that we paid so much for the extra insurance. It was a Ford Mondeo, though, and had ample room for four adult people with luggage.

Favorite sites would be the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, the Blarney Castle, and my husband the castle freak loved King John's Castle in Limerick.

Thanks a lot you all! Great tips!

First of all, we now know we'll have to rent a car. Then the plan this far is to drive to west coast and explore some of the great places you mentioned. Then probably giant's causeway and Belfast. And finally Dublin.

It's only 10 days... :)

Make sure you go to Kilarney, south of Limerick. It was a really beautiful town. From there, drive south along the N71 (?) to Ladies' view for a spectacular view of the lakes.

Northern Ireland is really interesting. Go for a drive through Shankhill road and Falls road for a great insight into Irish politics. The murals there are great.

BTW, rent a car well in advance of getting there. When we got our car, there were a few people who came up to the counter and got turned away as there was not a single car left to rent in the whole airport.
