Hi, Im travelling to Thailand with my girlfriend around the end of september, just for a couple of weeks. Obviously we want to see as much as possible, ......are internal flights expensive?? or is coach travel better from bangkok to Chaing Mai or Phuket? Im not sure on travel times or prices/conditions so need to know which is better all-round...air or coach?

the flighes around Thaialnd is inexpensive, between 4000Baht to 2000 Baht. it is around 100USD to 50USD.

the bus is valued i think. from BKK to ChiangMai on VIP bus is only no more than 600 Baht for 8 hours. not too bad.

i am a bus traveler, if not time limited.

good luck!!

Yes! Domestic flight by low cost airline is not so expensive and you will save lot of time if you fly. But if you want to save some money from accommodation, overnight bus is good choice or you can take train which you will have bunk bed for better sleep!

If you need more info, just ask me! Hope I can help!

You can get some very cheap flights - Air Asia and its competitors are driving the prices down...

But overnight coaches and trains are my favourite (if available) - save on accomodation and you travel at a time that you'd just be sleeping anyway.

you can fly 500 miles in thailand for about 2000 bht (30 quid). chiang mai (the second city) is a good bit cheaper than southern thailand, a tad cooler (weather wise)and the people are more easy going which is really saying something as the thai people are in general a friendly bunch anyway . a wee tip . buy a sarong . they are cheap and come in very handy and multi-purpose . have a good one ... j

There are budget airlines in Thailand but I always get the overnight train. A second class ticket gets you a bed in a fan compartment and usually costs about 450 - 550 Baht depending on whether you want a top or bottom bunk.

Yes, I would definately encourage train travel as well. It is nice because you can get up and walk around the different carts, eat some lunch in the dinning cart, meet many people, and then head back to your bunk, and sleep in privacy(even 2nd class beds have a privacy curtain).

Unfortunately, I did have a crappy experience on my train ride from Kuala Lumpur to Suratthani(near Koh Samui)

It is an extremely long trip, and I couldn't sleep at all.

I guess there was a holiday or something, so from KL to butterworth, there was no sleeping cart for me, so I had to stay in a seat the whole time. I arrived in butterworth at like 6am, and had to wait there till 2:30pm for the 2nd leg. I couldnt get first class sleeper, so I had to stay in a seat until the porter came to make up the beds. But by the time that happened, it was around 11pm, and I would be getting off soon at suratthani(arrived 1:15am). Then, I had to hang out in the train station till 6am to take a ferry to Koh Samui.

In the end, I was awake for 52 straight hours, and only had a chips and oreos to eat the whole time. It was terrible. But thats what I get for not booking in advance.

Anyways, yeah, take the train. I doubt you will have the same experience I did. Most of my problems were my fault for not booking everything properly.

Good luck and have fun!!
