safe-keeping of money

Travel Forums Europe safe-keeping of money

I will be staying in a dorm on an upcoming trip to Europe. I'm concerned about the safe-keeping of my valuables as would be the case for anyone. Any ideas of places to split the keeping of cash?

My all-time favourite: dirty underwear. And if you are a girl, hiding part of your stash with the tampons or in a sanitary pad is a good option. (Those with the plastic wrappers are good.) No guy will ever dig through this!

Having at least 4 different wallets also helps. If one is found, most people stop looking.

But the very best strategie is still to stay in dorms that have lockers.

I have a question that goes in the same sense à radiant's. I am leaving for a month and a half, and will stay in hostels. The problem is, I don't want to have to carry my passport everywhere. I want to go out at night, and not having to wear my passport on me. Is it secure to leave it in the locker with my backpack at the hostel? What is the most secure way to make sur that my passport wont get stolen?
Thank you!

Most hostels offer a free safe for your own personal use. A lot of people store their passports and their traveller's cheques or credit card in there. It is only very inconvienient to use it because if you want to leave or take money, you have to locate one of the staff and get them to open the safe.

So despite the safe you have always at least a little cash with you - the cash the thieves are after.

About your passport - make sure you copy all your important documents several times and leave one set of copies with somebody at home. One set goes with you wherever you go, the second you carry in your backpack.

The copies make it easier to get a new passport from your embassy in case you loose it, and the set at home can get you out of trouble, for example if your parents or friends need to convince your travel health insurance company that indeed you are insured with them. Yet another set of copies should be digitalised and mailed to your email address.
