Need some help... We are currently in ko phi phi thailand, although it is beautiful. The commercial, upmarket holiday resort feel to the place has nauseated us a little. We have heard Ko tao attracts less of a crowd, more travellers etc. As well as having some decent beach bars. Has anyone been there recently? Can you recommend any cheapish, clean, decent places to stay? And/or give us some idea what the island is like? Your feedback would be much appreciated........

Hi Kez,

We were in Koh Tao last year and it really is gorgeous. We stayed on Sai Ree Beach in a place called SB Cabana, beach hut was about 750baht a night (with own bathroom and fan). There are quite a few bars and restaurants. (Check out Choppers - it's an Aussie/Irish Bar with a brilliant live band).

When we were there in Aug/Sept it was fairly quiet as it was low season, so I couldn't tell you how busy it would be now.

It's a great place to snorkel and scuba, good visability and very cheap.

Have Fun

Hey Kez,

I've been there a couple of times now and I love the place. It's a really chilled out little island, and its full of travellers!

I stayed on Ao Chalok Ban Kao bay which is more chilled out and relaxing than Hat Sai Ree (though if you want to party its only 50baht in the taxi to that beach). Cant exactly remember the name of the place we stayed, but its right next to Budda View dive resort (if you're planning on diving at all, you can get a free lift to this bay on the Budda View dive van when the boat gets to the dock, there will be touts there). It cost 400baht/night with a fan, though the electric is not on during the day. There are loads of other cheap bungalow places along there too. I'd recommend getting the early boat across so you can get the accomodation before anyone else.

As for Choppers, check out my photo gallery, there's a picture of me in there..
