I'd sure think so. Im hoping that 2 grand will get me through a few months, so I would certainly think 10 grand would go for quite a while, especially in countries where the local currency is much weaker than the USD
I was down in Peru in August and it is possible to spend $500 a month and be comfortable. There are places in SA that are cheaper so 10K for a year is more than enough.
It's plenty; my guess is that half would suffice.
It really depends what you do there. for example in Aregentina dinner in restaurant costed me 5$ in brazil 18$, airplane tickets is pain, and hostels,
though in Uruguay for example you can find a hotels for 8$ a night
If your like me and gunna spend a couple of weeks at Galapogus islands and a month in the amazon on a underground adventure then you may struggle. Ive saved up $25,000 ozzie dollars which I hope will allow me to do these adventures and travel through South America for 6 months and a couple of weeks in Cuba and another month in mexico.
You should have plenty with that! Most of South America is just soo cheap for food, accommodation, beer, cigarettes, whatever....
Chile and Brazil are the most expensive I found and you will go through 2-3 times as much a day in those countries as you would in say Peru or Bolivia. Argentina falls somewhere in the middle.
Its a good point that if you want to do anything extra-special like a trip to the Gallapagos or Easter Is. or if you want to head down to Antartica then it's a different ballgame.
But I would say with confidence that you can make $10,000US stretch up to a year if you are budget backpacking.
Hope that helps
