I was in the same position! The YMCA prices have rocketed, so unless you're happy spending around $700HK on a room, it isn't the best option.
Head for Nathan Road and Mirador Mansions (the airport bus has a stop just outside and, if you're coming from China, the Tsim Sha Shui KCR and MTR station is right next door); it's one step up from the notorious Chungking block - but with the same prices - and has quite a huge range of budget options. I stayed in a twelve person dorm on the 13th floor, which was part of New Garden Hostel. It cost $60HK a night, was clean, had free drinking water, nice people and hot water. I think it's about the cheapest you'll find and was a great place to meet up with people who wanted to look round the city together.
If you want single rooms or a smaller dorm, the same hostel also has these - and they've just been redecorated, I think. I'm not sure about the prices but I know it's absolutely possible to bargain if you're staying for more than two nights.
Good luck and don't panic - there's A LOT to do in Hong Kong, even though it's more expensive, and you won't be alone for long.

I just came back from HK and I stayed in a cheap hostel in Tsim Sha Tsui called 'Li's Hostel'... the area was a little dodgy, and the rooms weren't hugely clean, but you can get a room for US$9 a night. Worth looking into if you're on the cheap. You can book through this website... just check the accommodation section.

What do you mean by the area was a little 'dodgy' ?
I checked out Li's hostel online and i found prices around 20euros a night (single-room, shared bedroom). how could you get it for 9 dollars a night `? that's a really amazing price.
and ta-scha:
what's it like to stay with 12 people in a dorm? i'm scared lol
if someone would be coming with me it would be no problem but i'm travelling alone as i am more independent that way.
otherwise ~7 euros a night would be the cheapest i have found !
thanks
thomas

Although Chunking is quite notorious, there are budget accommodations which are cleaner than in Mirador. Try the Dragon Inn at 3rd floor Block B of Chunking. It's quite clean but the room is really small but have a private bath. Will cost you about HKD160 to 200 per night. Cheaper dorms are offered only in youth hostels such as S.G. Davies but they are quite a lot far from the city and would cost you excessive transportation expenses. I think the lowest rate is HKD80 per night. I haven't found any cheaper place to stay. I you'll find one, please inform for my future trips. Thank you.
