What and where are the best beaches in Crete, Greece?
I am spending a week in August with friends there and we are trying to figure out where to go exactly...
Oh, and any suggestion about hotel would be greatly appreciated.

Try the south coast of Crete,I have been there and I think Damioni,Kali Limenes,Matala,Sougia,Preveli are very nice beaches.
The second area is Falassarna and Elafonisos in the west coast.
Regards from Greece.

Dear Lorenzo,

Crete has a lot of nice beaches, the point is that as August is the peak period everywhere will be crowded.
In order to give you a good reply you have to give your taste, as there are beaches ideal for families, for sport activities, for parties, for naturism.
Crete is a long island almost 550 km long, so you have to choose your destination, and in a week time it will be better to concentrate either to East Crete if you fly to Heraklion or to West Crete if you will fly to Chania.
For Hotels I can recommend you when you choose the area and you give your budget, but only in a private message as I do not want to make any free publicity for any of the hoteliers.

I spent the summer working on Crete last year. I was in a small town called Plakias, its an hour (by bus) south of Rethymno. There is a great hostel there, Plakias Hostel, its truly the land of the lotus eaters, you won't ever want to leave. Plakias beach is OK, but the neighboring Damnoni beach is great.
I hope you go!
