I have just over a week in vietnam - i land in saigon and fly out from hanoi. Just wondering what are the must do things as have a short time to travel and wanted to know about the currency - do i need US$s? Can i withdraw money from the ATM in the main cities or should i just take the money that i need for the trip - any ideas for budgets?

Mu Nie - sand dunes
Hoi An - clothing made to measure
Ha-Long Bay - overnight boat trip
Hue - Tam Coc Caves
Hanoi - Water puppet theatre
Sapa - experience chilled Vietnam & real people

Take American dollars. Only ATMs in Saigon

Ho Chi Minh - Drinks on the rooftop of the legendary Rex Hotel. Very kitschy, very cool.

All over Vietnam - Eat. The food's fantastic and supercheap.

You can exchange money in big city like Hanoi and HCMC,ATM is available everywhere now. (in Hanoi 100 estimatedly)

The must do thing here is to eat. ESP when you come to Hanoi, u must try and understand why the city is ranked the top ten city of cuisine in the world. You shouldn't miss the Water puppet, the Museum of Ethnology too.. Fantastic...

In HCMC, i dun't have any idea, but if you can cross Hoi An, remember to visit the old streets, plenty to see and to buy...

Come and enjoy!

hi there,

first stop in mui ne for a night or two if you're into beach life.
then i would travel to hoi an for excellent food and cheap clothes and from there to hanoi to enjoy the wonderful old quarter for as long time as possible. if you have time, take a boat to cat ba island in halong bay. maybe you need to choose between halong bay and mui ne as the time is so limited.

i wouldn't go to sapa as its very touristy and the locals are just trying to rip you off. it's ok if you have a lot of time but as you have only week you shouldn't bother.

i hope you love it there!

I think Hoi An was my favourite place, loved the old French colonial buildings, and you must try cao lao, which is a noodle dish unique to the Hoi An area, really delicious, I would love to eat some of that right now.

Saigon has to be one of the most exciting cities of Asia, some much going on & a good atmosphere, much nicer the Hanoi imo.

Have fun!

For only your over 1 week in Vietnam. Because you land in Hochiminh City, then you should spend 2 or 3 days there for Mekong Delta tour, then I recommend fly to Phan Thiet, enjoin beautiful and wild beach there(2 days at least), I think. Then to Hoi An, you can take the bus or train from Mui Ne, no flight, ~10 hours. Visit Hoi An, don't forget Cua Dai beach and My Son(2 days). Then fly to Hanoi, spend there 1 day or take a 1day tour to Halong bay to see the World Heritage Site.
Hope you enjoin Vietnam.

You can use US dollas or VND, those money are popular with travelling in Vietnam. You can with draw money from ATM in Saigon, Hanoi and other big cities.
I think you'd travel around Saigon as Muine(beautiful beach), explore the Mekong delta river. Then transfer to Hoi An(old quarter), and Danang with wonderful beaches.
Transfer to old citadel Hue
Fly or train and bus for save money to go to Hanoi and travel around there as Halong bay, SApa.
Have a good time!
