I'm heading to Afghanistan across the Iranian border around October this year.
People keep hassling me about how it's supposed to be dangerous and I shouldn't go.
Has anyone been recently and can give me some backup that it isn't that bad - it's never as bad as people say.
ps. anyone want to come too? especially if you speak Urdu ;-)

I've read that especially the borderarea's with Pakistan are dangerous (southern parts). Cities like Herat and Kabul are relatively safe. I travelled 3 years ago trough Iran via Pakistan to India. I think Afghanistan is a very interesting part. Are you planning to travel to pakistan as well from Kabul? Its true to say that for most this looks like a suicidal idea. But in fact you should just know the dangerous areas and avoid it. Goodluck.
Hey Nick, A very macho idea but there's a war going on and the country's in the process of falling apart again cause Bush and company don't know WTF they're doing. If it falls apart TOTALLY while you're there and you get kidnaped please don't come on the BBC/CNN crying and pleading for your life - take your decapitation like a man. What a "genius" idea - walking into a war (at least if you signed up in the army you'd make some money). I don't want to be rude but Afghanistan is not in Africa. You probably make a mistake in the post.
