Hello everyone.
Me and a few mates are heading away round the world for a year soon, and were just wondering if anyone could tell us the age that you have to be to hire a car in Los Angeles as it is one of our stops, and would be looking to hire a car maybe for a few weeks and drive about. We are all 21-23 years old and heard that it could be 25 before you can hire there??
Cheers

Most of the major car rental agencys require the driver to be 25 yrs. old and a credit card to rent. You may be able to find a smaller company that will do it, but they are few and far between.

i went to LA 2 years ago and I think I was 21-22 at the time. I was actually able to rent a car at a small dealership for quite cheap. ask at your place of accomodation and hopefully they can help you. it is a good idea to rent a car as there isn't too much of a public transport system going on there.

I've looked at this once, and you are able to rent from most of the big companies if you're at least 21. The only problem is that they have a surcharge of around $25-$30 per day if you're under 25. Of course, it's not too much if there's a few of you to split it.
Or, as sarahjapan said, try a smaller place (not one of the big chains), as they might let you. Just make sure you read the insurance agreement carefully. Because it may mean that you're not (or just barely) covered. If anything happens, you'd be paying through the roof.

When I was 21 I drove a hire car in California, but person who initially hired it was older than 25. I was in the States again in March and went to hire a car again and the rental company asked me if I was over 25 with a credit card in my name. I'm not sure how much luck you are going to have with this but all the best anyway!
