If you like beaches and tourist towns, check out Byron Bay There's a greally great lookout there and if you go at sunset/sunrise you can get some great shots. And if you want to see Australia trying desperately to be like California... check out the Gold Coast (although unless you're a Japanese tourist you might want to spend a short time there). If you want to see a town that's a little bit 'different', check out Nimben. It's a funky little hippy town (that's quickly turning into a tourist town). The art gallery there is amazing, and the buildings are all so colourful and creative. It's worth a visit (especially if you go during the weed festival).

how is the gold coast possibly trying to be like california?
Hi Garry,
if you're into nice wine and cheese you should go to Hunter Valley. It's off the coast about three hours north of Sydney and it's definitely worth a day trip visiting some of the wineries .

Hi Gary,
When you arrive in brisbane i suggest you explore from the CBD area, if you like big shopping complexes. The Queens Plaza is a fairly new establishment here and loads more to see as you walk around.........take a loook at the info centre when you arrive for more detail........
Catch a bus and you could go into The Valley, loads of retro style shopping, pub for a drink (if your legal)etc...For abit of excitement, we have the Story Bridge climb with views of the city. Or you could hire a bike, and explore the views around brisbane river. That ride could take you out to a place called Southbank, stop there for coffee etc.......
For mountain views and more check out, Mt cravatt...fairly close to city....further out, mount tambourine is about half and hour from city.
Anyhow, i hope this info helps you abit.
All the best, enjoy.

I wouldn't bother. I'd rather fly from Sydney to Brisbane and then drive north from there to places around the Sunshine Coast (Noosa, Maroochydore, etc).
But if you must, try Port Stephens (Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay) and the Byron Bay area.

Hi Garry,
I suggest that as you drive up the coast from Sydney cut in and to the Hunter Valley Wine reagion then come back out onto the coast road and head up to Byron Bay (Byron's fun but a bit of a tourist mecca these days) - while there check out Lennox Heads, Cabaritta and Kingscliff. The Goldie is fun for the nightlife. Brisbane has great things to do and see (Hot Air balloon Ride on a clear morning is pretty cool). I'd then make your way to the Sunshine Coast (and you can go see Steve Irwin at Australia Zoo!!) and up to Fraser Island (if you go to Rainbow Beach you can hire a 4WD from the Backpackers there and head on over to Fraser Island (definately worth the effort). Hope you have a great time.
Safe travels.

The plastics.
Fraser Island (off Hervey Bay) is a must see. Its World Heritage listed and is simply amazing. Imagine an island totally made out of sand. No soil, just sand. Huge towering trees growing totally out of sand.
Crystal clear lakes with white sandy bottoms.
If you are going over- take a 3 day package with a group. You'll get to see whole island.
Cheers Kay
