I am currently in New Zealand and next stop is thailand, before heading to China and then to do the trans mongolian to Moscow from Beijing (with my friend).

I haven't yet got a tourist visa for Russia and don't plan on booking a tour (will book the necessary legs of the train journey myself and a couple of hotels/hostels to register my visa).

As we only have limited time in NZ don't think I can get the Russian invitation/visa here, so am depending on getting it in Thailand.

All the information I have read online is really confusing. Does anyone know how easy this would be?

Hi Melissa, I think the best thing you can do is to get an invitation letter from the first hotel (together with the confirmation for the booking). and with this you can go to the Russian Embassy in Bangkok and they will tell you what papers to fill in.

There are a number of companies that will create an invitation letter for you. They'll list a hotel that you are staying at, but you don't actually have to stay there. Make sure you tell them where you want to apply for the Visa, as I believe it must be listed on the invitation letter / voucher.

You only need to register your visa at your first stop in the country or if you are staying for 3 or more days in a place.

Check out www.waytorussia.net for visa support. It costs 30 bucks US and they will provide you with an invitation letter to take to any embassy in order to get your visa. It takes 24 hours for the invitation and you don't have to book any hotels or make any solid plans. Great travel info on the site as well!
