I am headed to India in late july - august. While I have traveled SEAsia extensively this will be my 1st time on the subcontinent.

My plan is from Delhi north to Shimla, Manali. Leh through Jammu and Kashimir to Dalhousie and Mcleod Ganj, Dharmasala into Punjab and then to Rajasthan; Jaisalamar, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra, Delhi.

Is two months a realistic time frame?

Is 500US$ per person enough cash for my girlfriend and I. We are not too fussy with the rooms and food, don`t plan on shopping alot but do plan to doing some rafting up north and maybe hit the tiger reserve and do a camel trek.

I dont like traveling too quickly and enjoy hanging out and soaking it up. Also I am hoping to avoid flying.

Help me out. Am I nuts? Or on track?

umm nuts . . .

thats a lot of places you want to see in 2 months..unless u wanna just breeze through all . . and you will need to double ur stake i think ..$1000 per person looks more like u plan to see a whole lot of places ..
anyways just go for it and enjoy

Mate, I agree, you are totally nuts. India's cheap but it's not free!
Think you would probably want to budget about $1500pp for two months, especially with all that travel. Travel is cheap but with about 15 stops that you have planned, you are underestimating your expenses. And I think you would be pretty lucky to get away with $10 a night on accomodation.

Now that we have established that I am nuts(I appreciate the candid responses!) lets move on to why.

Whats the biggest cost? Transport? Will it be high season in the Northernmost areas during that time? Would this intinerary be better spread over 3 or 4 months? I am aiming for quality time not burning through the country.
1000 is doable I was just wondering what I could reaaalllyy get away with.

yea.. 3/4 months seem more like it...but then $1000 needs to increase, may be when i mentioned 1000$ i was being too optimistic...i would say on a shoe string budget you would be spending $30 (approx 1000Rupees) a thats $900 per month..guess that would be more realistic

actually 2 months is more than enough unless you plan to stick around at one place for a week or so. Problem is your budget. $500 is far too less. $1500-$2000 is a safe bet. Transportation is not going to be too expensive if you are travelling by train/bus etc. Air travel & cabs will obviously cost you a lot more. You can find budget hotels at most of the places you mentioned.
