One more thing.
I recommend that u get a copy of the following book, if u have not got it, already.
SE Asia, on a Shoestring, by Lonely Planet.
It will give u advise, on where to travel, about transport, accomodation, money, safety issues, suggested routes etc etc.
There might even be an On a Shoestring book, specific to Malaysia. This would be even better, because if the book only covers one country, there will be more details, about the country.
It costs around 25 $ US and is available in most book shops, around the world, and is translated, in to various languages.

Malaysia...??? SAFE??? It's like a walk in the parks... couldn't be any safer... don't believe what you hear about most and many asian countries... the people are friendly down here... no worries...

malaysia safe, i'm a 60 yr old woman and got back 5 days ago. safe as houses is the saying. take the same precautions as you would in your own home town. kl airport. one of the most user friendly in the world. no back alleys and secure your money, but that is the rule anywhere in the world is'nt it?
