The safest areas are Miraflores and San Isidro.
Lima is not a very safe city anywhere unfortunately so take extra care wherever you go.

I second that. It would be nice to be able to say better things about Lima, but it´s not a city to delay in for long really.
I stayed in the Miraflores district - my accommodation was basic but it was fine. It was called Eurobackpers....they have a website. I met other backpackers since who said they had much nicer accomodation in that it´s worth checking around.

Hope that helps!

Evelyn ;)

You can stay in Miraflores. There exist good and cheap acommodation.
One is Hostal Eiffel (www.hostaleiffel)near the Larco Mar Shopping and Central Miraflores Park where exist restaurants and places to dance to know people.

Welcome to Peru!!!

Lima like anywhere is matter of opinion, some people like it, others hate it. Most people just pass thru. Hostel Sami Wasi in Miraflores is a very nice friendly place, 10 dollars per night in a dorm.

Over the years I have been in many different hostals in Lima (and suburbs ofcourse) and nevr one I felt at home at. But since 2 years there is the best option for a stay in Lima - in my opinion- : Casa Ana. Warm, safe, clean and very friendly. They don't have too many beds so it might be worth making a reservation. They can pick you up at the airport if you want.
[email protected] (Hein and Ana). Hein who speaks spanish, english, dutch can also go with you for citytours for a very small fee (worth it!)
A doubleroom is 12 or 14 US, not sure if they raised the prices, a single is half. And that is incl. a great breakfast and loads of help and info if you need it.
Buen viaje,

If you are looking for a good place to meet people and party I would recommend The Point. The staff here make an effort not just to recommend the best places but to actually take you out for the night to some good clubs and bars. They also have stuff like free breakfast, free internet as well as the usual hostel facilities. Prices vary according to dorm size but are pretty cheap. Check out the website:

I am half peruvian and live in lima. I lived in San Icidro and went to school in Miraflores for 5 years when I was quite young. Always felt safe and have some nice memories from there. My mom is Peruvian and is a short, blonde blue eyed little lady and she manages there alone just fine. Maybe its because she is a local she knows how to fend for herself without a hitch. She always says, "stay alert, dont show fear, and you will have a great time"...basically don't do anything dumb that you know you shouldnt do in a third world country.

I would stay in Lima for a little bit, see the main sites, enjoy the great restaurants and then head over to Asia, Trujillo, Arequipa, Cuzco, Ica, and all the many other incredible sites Peru has to offer.

I love Peru, and especially the food.
