It depends how long you want to go for. If you just want a quick holiday to get away from it, go to your travel agent and see what deals they have. If you want to go away a bit longer, think about all the places you've ever wanted to visit and read up on them. Then decide.

PS Scotland is very nice!!!

Eastern Europe, not that I know too much about it, but it's cheap & the weather should be pretty good in August & September. Go there quick before the masses get there!

there is never a 'right' destination. it is the journey to get there, that counts. you will never know whether the place you intend to go is the 'right' place, unless you go there and decide for yourself whether you have enjoyed the trip or otherwise. a lot of people would love to travel, but sometimes they doubt themselves whether they could afford to travel. you are still young, just go and enjoy yourself, do not doubt whether a place will be enjoyable or not. if it is not your home country, then you will sure enjoy the expereinces in other countries. the culture in asia is extremely different from those in Europe. you will be amazed at what you see. you will enjoy yourself in Asia

Without having a clue where you want to go, I would first suggest narrowing to tropic or temperate, then eastern or western culture. You mentioned that you dont want large crowds, so either pick an off season or an out of the way, but well documented destination. Then decide what you want to do when you are there.

I myself travel for adventure so I would search for destinations that offer things like parachuting, hang gliding, speilunking, rock climbing, white water rafting, and so forth, combined with the opportunity to explore ancient ruins off the beaten path or some similar tours.

Most reciently I visited the aztec ruins in new mexico (cliff dwellings that aren't really aztec) while doing some rock climbing and hiking. Before that I was hunting Brown bear, among other things (with a camera) in Alaska.

My next trip I am taking the Beyonders Club to Kenya as I mentioned in another post.

My point is... get an idea why you are going in the first place, then go to the place that offers what you are looking for. I agree with whoever said that the destination isn't the thing, but getting there.

One of my motto's is, "Expect every trip to be the vacation of a lifetime... and it will be."

August in Asia would be a good opportunity to go somewhere that's too cold in winter - Tibetan plateau (as noted by an earlier poster) would be good, and might match your desire to go somewhere with less people. They have just opened up a new rail line in China, going from Qinghai province to Lhasa - that would be an amazing trip!
