Travel Forums Europe Thoughts on Romania / Moldova?

Hi! Was just looking for some general advice...I'm in the middle of planning my next trip with a friend and we choose Romania, not for a specific reason but just because it looks like a nice place to visit! We only have about 9 days, including flying from the US, and I wanted to get people's thoughts on if this is a good place to go for that amount of time, etc. Also, having not been to Eastern Europe, is there a better place to visit? just looking to relax, maybe do a little hiking, and soak up some culture!

Romania is a great country with great people and wonderful nature. 9 days can be ok though 15 would be much better :)

It could be something like a couple of days in Bucarest, then Carpatian region, and after that Bucovina region with its monasteries or Maramures.... so many possibilities.....

by Moldova do u mean the region inside Romania or the Republic of Moldova? If the answer it´s the Republic of Moldova i think that maybe it´s not worthy with just 9 days and for the payment of the visa, etc.... (i have to say that´s a really beautiful and quiet country that doesn´t seem to be the poorest in Europe)

Good luck!

Hey! Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Yes I was talking about the country Moldova...but considering your advice we may skip it. I know 9 days is so short! But I can only take one week off work unfortunately (so skimpy on the vacation time)...

We are thinking of renting a car given the short time, and so that we can travel around. Do you think this makes sense? Would love to hear what you think are the you said I'm not sure how many areas of the country we can make it to...

About the car.... i´m not very sure what to say.

For sure it´s a great idea and the best way for saving time.

Last year i met a dutch guy in Bucharest who was crossing Europe with his own car without any problem to that moment, but:

- you should consider the wierd way in which they generally drive in Romania, nothing to do even with the craziest drivers comparing them to the ones i´ve experienced in other countries, but maybe you are used to it??

- road conditions

- high level of car theft in the region.... as not all the areas are so rich maybe a car full packed with bags and tourist is way too atractive....

- Police/ Fake police trying to make money out from tourists for whichever excuse

i mean that maybe planning in advance what you want to see will help moving from one place to the next one using one of the hundreds of microbuses going everywhere ( and this way knowing how is it the road there), or even using the train....

Maybe you better wait for someone who could give you a more postive advise about the car :)

About the highlights in romania you can start making a research on google about these regions i told in last post( Maramures, Bucovina, Carpats..) and you´ll find sites dedicated to them with info in english and pics. To that i´d add a visit to Timisoara (if i´m not wrong it was the first european country to have public electric lighting system) or the blacksea. Though it starts to be too much for 9 days!!!

I hope you´ll enjoy Romania and its nice people.
