Hi im a 25 year old male in Scotland. I was ill for 4 years with kidney probs but im better now. I have always wanted to go to Australia and do a bit of backpacking. I would like to go for around 8 weeks in Nov time. I just want to go and meet new people and party. I was going to take around 2,000 pound? Is that enough? Can anyone recommend any hostels or places to go to meet people as i lost almost all my friends during my illness. I was thinking of going to Sydney. It would be a big step for me as i dont have alot of confidence at the moment after whats happened. Any advice would be great.

I'm off to Sydney on the 15th July and will be staying in a hostel on Coogee Beach. It's called Surfside Backpackers and seems to look good. Have you thought about going with a group? I'm going with Oz Intro and the idea is that you meet up with a group of people and stay with Oz Intro for a week to get you started. You are met from the airport and taken to the hostel etc. and within the week you have trips out, different activities and as I say, you are with a group of people (up to 12). Another good thing is that you are given contact details for the others in your group so that you can be in contact before you go.

I think you've got guts doing it after what you've been through - good for you!

Anyway, hope this helps!

cogee beach is fun though not the greatest of beaches in australia though a good palce to start your trip. lots of tourists are generally in that area of sydney apparently.

Coogee is a great lil place, i loved in one of the apartments for 4 months but knew of someone staying at surfside and i went there once and it seemed pretty good, he was in a room with 4 people and they had their own tv! he seemed to think it was pretty good.

I have stayed in wakeup in sydney and its another good hostel.
