The Cook Islands is reasonably cheaper than the french polynesia islands in means of places to stay, shopping etc. This site has a selection of luxury to budget accommodation options that may help you decide

If you are not dive certified, and would like to be for your trip, I might recommend taking the 4-day certification course on Rarotonga. I just looked up the web site of the place where I took the course; and for NZ$370 you get the certification and 4 open water dives. I'm not trying to advertise the company, I'm just thinking that with the 10 days I had on Rarotonga, it might have been a bit much, were it not for the diving. Which, by the way, is fantastic; I enjoyed it more than the Great Barrier Reef.

To answer your question though, it's a super laid back place, much less touristy than say parts of Fiji or French Polynesia. As such, it does not have a lot of the positives and negatives that come with aggressive tourist destinations, so if you're looking for a good place to just chill out, I'd definitely recommend it.

Rarotonga is a fairly small island and the beaches around the main land are ok as to say. maybe visiting a neighbouring island like atu taki or somewhere like that i heard is good. diving is worth doing as it will keep you wise it is cheap enough for the south pacific.

currency is equivilent to the kiwi dollar.

I loved Rarotonga! I live on Maui and I've been to American Samoa, Moorea, Bora Bora and Tahiti. Of all the islands I've landed on Rarotonga was my favorite! It's small (but not too small) clean, friendly, cheap ( compared to French Poly ) and the weather is mild ( compared to Samoa ). I'm dying to go back but I can't get there anymore from Hawaii:( I'm so sad
