Is it something that goes hand in hand, or do you avoid them at all costs.

Just wondering as I normally meet the "stoners" whilst away and generally have a better time with them then I do with "straight" people.

I don't take drugs (anymore), and it doesn't bother me.

How about you lot???

Maybe you just relate better to them than to 'straight' people because of your drug-using past ;)

I don't take any drugs myself except alcohol, and I've heard only bad stories; about travellers ending up in jail over the few grams of pot they stupidly tried to take along, about people getting serious brain damage from the cactus stuff you can try in Ecuador (this may be just a rumour; can anyone corroborrate?), about travellers getting mugged while strolling through Buenos Aires stoned... the list continues endlessly.

I did drugs -quite a lot- (easy, I'm from pot-loving Holland ;) )
But hardly when travelling.

Actually: I accidently smuggled about 10 grams into belgium, unknowingly: A friend of mine gave me his bag to take with the car, while he was arriving later that day by train. In his bag was the pot. It wouldn't have been a problem, until belgium police stopped the car, in which I was driving with a Cuban and a Bulgarian - enough for them to search the car. I was unaware of the content of my friends backpack, so I answerd in true honesty that I did not had any drugs or weapons... For some unknown reason the sniffer dogs didn't smell the stuff. Lucky us. I only found out when my friend pulled the little green bag out of his backpack that evening. I think I had a heartattack at that moment. (the amount would've for sure put me in jail...)

Had it offered a lot though. Walking in Prague, London, Berlin, Moskou, I'm always approached at some point by the local 'retailers'. I just stepped out of the airport transfer in Johannesburg when the carguard of the hostel offerd me 'the purest Durban poison in town'. A few weeks later, when I talked to a police officer who just confiscated a couple of kg's of 'dagga' as the green gold is called here, I even got a sample offerred by the cop, 'to try the South African weed and compare it with what i'm used to' (he knew I was from the netherlands). I refused, picturing myself in a South African prison cell (Although I believe he was not trying to nail me, but actually offering me the weed...)

And of course, while travelling from backpacker to backpacker, I came into contact with a lot of 'dopeys'. Usually the hostel employees are good sources: they know who to speak to, if they don't sell it themselves! ;)

But why should I risk my freedom during a couple of weeks holiday, when I can light as much as I like at home, even standing next to a cop - or better: ask him for a lighter!!!

Hey lucky escape Demian!! :) In my opinion Holland got it right - legalising Cannabis!! It´s crap that it should be illegal. In my opinion there are far worse LEGAL drugs such as alcohol, cigarettes and painkillers!! I´ve not known anyone die from cannabis - however I´ve known many people die, become extremely violent or looked a complete mess taking alcohol - also cigarettes have extremely poisonous chemicals in them to make them burn out quicker and the companies make loads of money from giving everybody cancer however people unfortunately smoke them unbeknown to this fact and then it´s all too late and they have lung cancer and they can´t stop!! It´s ridiculous that cannabis (being just a herb) should be illegal but there you have it - it´s part of this in sane world and I guess there should be a lot of other things I should moan;worry about but there you go!!

On a different note - obviously whilst travelling - it´s common sense to take extra precautions - after all you don´t know the laws nor the culture of another country - some countries take big offence to using drugs and so it´s as well to be sensible when it comes to respecting the other traditions of that country!! Unfortunately some people get thrown in jail even if they haven´t taken drugs for instance if they are planted on them and this is just horrible!! However if the person crosses the border and doesn´t have any respect for the law of that country or the culture then the consequences that occur are through nodoby else fault but theirs.

Also with regards to drugs - I think it´s OK to experiment - however I have never felt the need to take ectasy, crack, heroin or whatever the hell else there is out there. Alcohol as I´ve mentioned for the reasons above, is dangerous and although shouldn´t really be made illegal, should have more official warnings about the consumption of it and it´s consequences on others, and people should be more aware of this but I doubt it will ever happen in this lifetime although I hope. However if you have everything in moderation and don´t go for heroin or crack so as not to feed your body with poison and feed someone elses pockets then you are more or less on the right track, in my opinion.
