We’ve been reading some books about the country and made a plan how to travel around. Could you please give us some feedback on it, we would really appriciate it.
We are flying From Amsterdam into Mumbai on the 17th and plan to be in Panaji on the 21th of juli.
We want to look around and relax in that area for a week or so and then travel to Hampi where we plan to be on the 30th of juli. We want to stay there for about 3 day’s. See the lost city there and go to Chennai (Madras) to arrive there on the 2nd of august.
There we where thinking about seeing Mamallapuram just south of Chennai. It is supposed to be very nice and have a look at the Shore tempel.
Our plan is to take a train from there to Agra with the Tamil Nadu Express or the Grand Trunk Express. We are not sure whether we should already make reservations for this or not.
If this goes according to plan we’ll be in Agra 7 aug where we plan to stay for about three day’s and then go to Jaipur on the 10th.
We want to be in Delhi on the 12th or so because we leave from there on the 15th.
If you have some recommendations on the route or arranging train tickets please let us now.

Hey ben & Hans,

You seem to have all the right places in mind :)

I can help you on the second part of your journey....Panaji to Hampi makes sense as they are close by... there is a train from vascco da gama ( a statio) in goa which doesnt touch hampi as such but goes to places an hour or 2 from hampi.... or you can take a bus...which will be more convinient - you can fix this up once ur in Goa.

From Hampi to chennai - there is no direct transport. You would have to come to bangalore and from there pick up a train or bus. Bangalore to chennai has a lot of day -trains for which tickets are very easy to get. For the night trains you would need to book atleast a week in advance.....

chk out this link which is the link for online train can figure out the trains you need to take etc.

While you are at chennai an visiting the shore temple, do take a trip to pondicherry and check out auroville. There are some very nice resorts on the mahabalipuram road where you can put up and enjoy the sea!

As for train reservations to Delhi etc., check out in the link i mentioned.... normally train bookings are open 60 days in advance - book atleast 3 weeks in advance and you should be safe!

Else, India also has a lot of low cost airlines.... you might want to check out some of their fares for some parts of your trip...

Hope this helps. I am off to hampi for the weekend - so will get you more info :)... I am based in chennai - so if you want any other info, fel free to ask!!!

Hi Ben & Hans,
Greetings from Goa !!
My name is vivek and I've just returned from your part of the world after having spent interesting 4 weeks.
Welcome to India !! You will never regret coming here.
I'm based in Goa and I own a little resort at Bogmalo Beach. This is about 8 Kms from The Vasco-da-gama station from where you can take the train to Hampi.Neeraja from Chennai has already made some nice suggestions to you.
As suggested by Neeraja, you can book a cheap flight to Goa from Mumbai through the links she has forwarded to you.The journey by surface may not be very comfortable and takes forever ( 14 to 18 Hrs). The Goa Airport is only 5 Kms from my resort and if you would like,I'll be pleased to arrange your pickup from the airport.
Goa is quite spread out and needs a bit of travelling to experience it.No matter where you stay, you will have to travel distances in order to see/experience the whole of Goa.The cheapest way to go around Goa is to take two full day Sight-Seeing Trips by coach ( One Day North Goa and one day South Goa). They cover about 150 Kms in a day and about 7 or 8 sight-seeing spots. This way you end up seeing about 14 /15 spots in a couple of days. The cost is very very small - it costs just about Rs 120/- ( $ 2.5) per person per day.Alternately, taxis are also available for about Rs 1000/-( $30) a day.
Should you desire to stay at my resort, I'll be pleased to have you here and will happily make all these arrangements for you.I'll also be happy to book your ticket on train from Vasco-da-gama to Hampi.

Looking forward to here from you.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please... ]

Hi BEN and HANS,

From Hampi, you can travel to Bellary or Guntakal from where you can get a direct train to Chennai.Look out trains coming from Mumbai to Chennai. However, suggest you to reserve your sleeper accommodation in advance.

Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram)is about 56kms from Chennai and there are frequent buses and takes about 1-1.5hrs dependng on the traffic. You may need full one day and sugest you to stay in one of the resort hotels where you will have beach at the back of your room.Shore Temple is best seen both from out and inside. Please be a bit careful of touts. You can spend a day in Chennai and if time permits you can visit Madurai or Tanjore.

It is best to take Tamilnadu express compared to G.T.Express.Advance booking is a must.

You can reserve train tickets on line but you need to provide a local address to receive the tickets.
