does anyone have any experience going to Japan first and then look for a job that will help out in applying for a working permit?

Most of the big english schools will hook you up with a work visa, Nova, Aeon, Geos. You get 3 months on a tourist visa but dont say you intend to work when you arrive in Japan. Then when you look for a job make sure and ask if they will sponser you.

Possibly the most intelligent is to find a job before you go. And better get well informed about the work conditions and so on. For example I have read that in Nova (if you're interested in teaching languages) sometimes it's easy to get the job and the visa, but the people get really crazy there because you have to work in front of a screen during hours with no stop between one lesson and the next one.. so it could not be worth if you really want to discover the country... I think the best is to get well informed about your opportunities before and also to take a good amount of money with you...
good luck!
