Been in Mumbai, India for a year now, working and single.
So far, no problem, and frankly I do not expect anything negative.
People are very friendly and respectful, for sure as a woman you will get stares, but nothing to be worried about as they are always from afar.

Regarding clothes, many recommend sensible, which I am not sure what it means, after all the traditional sari leaves the belly out... They key here is you are foreigner, different and thus get stared at. Modern Indian girls are more and more dressing close to their bodies, especially when going clubbing, but in day-time, it is pretty much normal and not flashy....

Wish your wife all the best on her trip here.

I've lived in INdia all my life...bangalore,madras and now Bombay. Depends where your wife is going to work for lots of money and who has promised her this amount! Bombay is very safe for women but anything can happen anywhere, right? So take precautions and do not stay out late on your own in a new country, especially if you don't know the language.
Delhi is not the place for a single woman!! so opt out of that
Bangalore, safe and friendly atmosphere but Bangalore does shut down at 9pm!!
Would like to know where she is heading? I live in bombay and have moved around in the middle of the night with my daughter to the theatre...very safe. don't worry about the recent happenings. Bombay is healing slowly but surely. Things like that happen all the time. Just have to be aware of our surroundings.:)
All the best...keep us informed.

Forgot to mention that I am also a kind hearted,Christian woman. Regarding dress formalities. Bombay is very modern and girls are out in sleeveless/strappy tops and jeans. Obviously if one dresses to kill then there will be ogling. Travelling by train is a nightmare in any indian city for a stay away from trains. The auto rickshaws are safest. Never walk alone on the beaches or travel in an empty train or bus. if u need more info, keep us posted.

Hi there,

My office sent me to India to work in Mumbai and at first I was slightly worried about the same things you are worrying about - female, alone, blonde hair blah blah blah....but I never felt scared at any point due to not putting myself in any bad situations the same way I would never do that in any city, even at home!

She will more than likely have her own driver as they are so cheap, my driver in India (as were most of the people I met) was one of the nicest people I have ever met.....genuinly nice person who always gave me good advise and made sure I was ok.

You honestly have nothing to worry about and your wife is getting to visit one of the nicest places on earth with the nicest people.

I can't wait to go back

Hi - I was in India last October for 5 weeks, I travelled on public transport everywhere since it was sooo cheap! I had two instances of being touched, but I just made a huge scene and the two men involved (separate incidences) were so ashamed and embarrassed it was quite funny really! I never felt threatened at all - and I always wore long shorts and blouses anywhere in the streets, if travelling by bus I wore trousers...I was fairly covered up at the beach until the influx of Germans arrived with their thongs!!!

Oh and I walked around at night too, I actually felt safer there than I have done in London at night!!
