Anybody can give me advice about some cheap accommodation in Samui? We are planning to go for x-mas and stay for 3 weeks. And also, what is the best low cost way how to get from Bangkok to Samui? Any advice or recommendation is welcome! thanks! :)

Hi there,

We found that the cheapest way to Samui from BKK is the vip bus. I can't remember how much it cost but it's actually really comfortable and you can sleep. It does take quite a long time to get down there. We went to Koh Tao and got on the bus at 6pm, got to the island at about 10.30am!!
The price you pay should also include the boat transfer (but double check when your booking), there's a tonne of places along Koh San Road in BKK that you can book.
As for Samui itself, Cheweng has a beatiful beach and lots of gorgeous bars and restaurants along it at night-time (although it is REALLY touristy)!. Christmas is peak time so I would recommend booking somewhere in advance.
Have a look on TP for cheap accomodation or check out there is a range of budget and medium hotels and guesthouses.

Happy travels

The easiest option is to book at a travel shop, bus/boat package to get you to Samui. Pay the extra for fewer seats. There have been many reports of theft on these overnight buses. Keep everything of value in your day bag, locked and on your lap, or close by. Having your passport, camera & money stolen will ruin your holiday. Guard your valuables.

You are going during the busiest, most expensive time of year. I recommend that you stay at the less popular beaches if you expect to get a reasonably price room. Look at Mae Nam, Big Buddha, Bo Phut. If you want a less crowded option, look at the Krabi area. They are dozens of islands to choose from, at all price levels. Google 'koh lanta', 'koh jum' 'railey beach' and see if this is a better choice than Samui in Dec. Try '' if you are going and book something before you get there. It is packed out in Dec. Good Luck.

Many of my friends reckon that by far the nicest way to get to Samui is by can get a sleeper from Bkk...2nd or 1st class is meant to be really confortable and cheap.

It is an overnight train to Surrathani, from there you take the ferry to Samui, same as the buses.

This is not an expensive option and an all in package can be purchased at the'll bneed to find a web site for the details I'm afraid

Road travel in Thailand especially buses/minibuses is a hair raising experience...I drive myself as I don't trust others!?!?!
there is also a fferry from Chumphon about half-way down the coast...I don't think there is from Bkk but there is a small cruise ship from Pattaya.

you can fly from Bkk airport fro about 5000 return...there are loads of flights every day...
