My wife and I are looking into traveling the west coast from San Diego up to San Fran. Flying from Toronto into SAN (san diego)
We had a few questions.

1. Is one week enough to enjoy the 550 mile drive with stops?
2. Where do we stop along the way?
3. Average hotel prices?
4. Major or cool points of interest?
5. Which cities are worth spending the night?

Thanks to all in advance for responding.

Ohhhh....a week is pushing it! You could spend a week in either Frisco or San Diego!!! San Francisco is more expensive than San Diego...the drive it's self is beautiful! But spending too many hours on end is a drag, no matter how pretty the scenery ;)
Honestly, I would pick one place, and then do some day trips from there. No matter which city you choose, there is plenty to see and do! :)

I mentioned this to another post, will "copy & paste" it here:

Santa Barbara- if you want an unususal experience and are interested in landscape design- book a reservation for Lotusland- see http://www.lotusland.org/ for details. This garden will amaze you. Advance reservations are required, but it is worth it... if you are there in August, I beleive the lotus will be blooming (but check me on that claim!).

Hotels are varied, five star to bottom of the barrel. I stayed in a hotel once in SF that I WOULD NEVER suggest anyone stay in- it was bug infested and scary! Anyway, you can get ranges on prices from $130 for Motel 6 (bottom) to Shutters on the Beach at #350+ a night. Anything in between.

You could spend several days in San Diego area.

The cruise up the coast is great.

La Jolla, Laguna and Newport are all beautiful.

You could spend 2 days in the LA area.

San Luis Obispo, Cambria, Morro Bay and Monterey are nice

Santa Cruz is a 60's era counterculture town with amazing redwoods.

You could spend several days in SF area.

Depends on what you want to get out of the visit. Arts, culture, people, scenery?

Gas prices are about $3.24 USD a gallon for unleaded. OUCH! No telling in August what it'll be!

Best to you!
