Hi Guys, the seconds stop on my RTW trip is Rio, just looking to hear about peoples experiences and if anyone really recommends anything to do in particular while i'm there. Also I plan to travel overland to Peru, just wondering if anyone has made the same trip and has any tips for me from their experience.

Thanks in advance

Hallo Kye,
It is possible to reach Peru overland. It's a long way.
You have to go to Rio Branco, capital of the state Acre. There are buses from Rio. The buses are luxureous and the drivers are very capable.
In Rio Branco you have to change and take a bus to Cruzeiro do Sul on the Peruvian frontier.
To reach Rio Branco, I think you will need almost 65 hours by bus.
I was already in Cruzeiro do Sul but never went further into Peru.
It is possible and it is the only way overland to reach Peru.
The other way is by boat from Manaus.
Have nice (and long) trip.

Definetely some things to do in Rio... Corcovado (The Christ), Sunset at Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf), The Jardim Botanica is awesome (gardens), Ipenema and Copacabana (beaches. Democratica on Thursdays in Lapa is happening... Friday and Saturday... killer days in Lapa for pretty much a huge street party. If you can... try and hook up and hit a Bali Funk party on a friday and Saturday... Manguira funk parties rock. Take a favela tour and get the history and evolution of favelas. Buy funk music... your friends at home will be amazed at it. Ummm... Go to the Sahara market if you like, the Ipenema hippie market as well on Sundays is cool. Ummm... not sure how long you are staying... so.. that should get you started. I am guide here in Rio.. so let me know if you need some help - or even just organizing stuff. -snip-
Take Care dude... and have fun!

Hi Kyebrown!

Im sure you wont be disspointed with Rio, it is one of the most amazing places I've visited!

Totally agree with hat's ideas, unfortunately I didnt have enough time to do it all! I will personally recommend the favela tour (check this web out, they were fantastic!

My friend managed to go to a match in Maracana (not on a tour) and she highly recommends that too, even if you are not keen on the sport!

I wish I could go again! Im soooooo jealous! ;)

Take Care

Ihla Grande, a few hours bus ride (and a couple of hours bout ride) south of Rio is worth visiting. It's a real paradise island but still very accessible, with loads of stuff to do and see. Highly recommended for beach bumming, snorkling, day hiking, surfing, diving, etc.!!!
