I too will be in China mid Jan and it depends on what you want to see. We will be after photo opportunities and scenic area so most of our time will be south of Chengdu in the Chang Jaing, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yannan regions then on to Tibet. The 'Insight Guides' book on China or a DK one will give a good overview of scenic china and have lots of pictures and good maps. There are numerous sites on the web if you want to look up those areas. My girlfriend and I prefer the less touristy areas where possible, but we have to at least see the great wall. If you have a bit of time at your disposal the trains are an experience but you see wonderful landscapes that way and don't have to worry about lost luggage, early checkins or airport transfers. Look at for train routes. If you must fly look at there are a range of short trip passes where you pay very little for segments rather than point to point fares.

Trains (especially overnight ones) will be the best, usually.
It's hard to suggest a good itinerary if you don't provide any more information, especially your sightseeing and travel preferences.

The best way to travel china is by hard sleeper. I am in Xi'an now and i have traveled hard, soft, flight basically anything i can actually book. If you are planning on coming here July-Aug next year think twice as there are so many tourist and uni students traveling it makes booking tickets difficult. But there is a site that makes traveling by air affordable. It is It seems dodgy but it is totlaly legit i have used it no problems. I think Expedia owns it. Hope it helps.

You may book ticket from a travel agency. From there you can get a lower discount.

I'd like to give you some advice on visiting China. If you come to China, you may visit cities, such as HongKong, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Tibet, Guilin, etc. It's a little pity that you are not coming China in the beggining of the year, otherwise I would recomend you to come to visit Nanning because China-ASEAN Expo. and Nanning International Folk Song Art Festival are annually held here in the end of October and the beginning of November.During that time, Many people from 10 ASEAN countries will come here.

I hope that my advice can help with your coming travel in China.

Good luck!

1) What are you more interested in seeing/doing/experiencing while on this trip?
2) What's your budget like?
3) Do you have any knowledge of Chinese?
Trains (especially overnight ones) are the best (most cost and time-efficient) way of travelling within China.
