Hey guys,
First off, a big thank you to the Travelerpoint forum in general for running such helpful site! This was instrumental in my last trip to Egypt and I had a blast!!

I'm off to Morocco in a few months and am beginning to plan my trip. I've seen so many pictures of the amazing Sand Dunes in Morocco. I'm hoping to make it out to Merzouga to see the dunes of Erg Chebbi- how do I get there?? I'll be all over the place- do I try to go from Fez? Marrakesh? Is it easy to get there?

Thanks for your help, everyone!
I'll be travelling solo starting December 21 to mid-January.

I can't wait! Reply to me directly at -snip- if you want...

Hi Wil

You can visit Merzouga as you travel between Fes and Marrakech. Although it adds some time to the journey, it makes more sense than the alternatives if you are visiting both cities.

As far as how to get there goes, you've a few alternatives, and you don't give many clues about your circumstances.

If you are feeling wealthy, or you are travelling with friends, you could hire a 4x4 with or without a driver/guide from roughly 1,500Dh a day (self drive).

Sharing a Grand Taxi is cheaper, and they will get you to the more easily accessable auberges(the Panorama is the best of these), but obviously ancient Mercedes aren't going to be up to plowing through deep sand...

I'm sure that there is some sort of bus service. Rissani has a busy bus station, but I've never tried to do it this way. There's no train.

Whilst you are thinking about this, don't forget Erg Chegaga. Out in the desert beyond M'hamid, they're even harder to get to, but I much prefer the ambience. Less tourists, more genuine, and a much bigger 'sand sea', if not the spectacular height of the dunes at Merzouga.

I can send you some photos if you want.
