Planning to spend a week in Greece, not very keen on spending hours on a ferry boat (sorry....sea sickness....) plus our deam island Santorini proved to be very expensive 

So, which places would you recommend for a nice quiet time in the continent, close to the beach or an island which is not too far by ferry from Athens?

We will be spending a day or 2 in Athens and will hire a car; do you think we will survive reading the road signs and not get lost too much ?

thanks lot!

All of the best places I can think of are a good ferry ride. Santorini of course has my heart...absolutely beautiful!!! Mykonos was a lot of fun, as was Rhodes. We did stop at some smaller spots: Ermoupolis, Gythion and Navplion. Navplion is a very nice place, nice shops, restaurants, not full of hustle and bustle. Ermoupolis is very small and very quiet, but still very pretty. Gythion...meh, it didn't do much for me.

The medication that they give out on the cruise ships for seasickness is meclizine, which I find works wonders, and doesn't make you as drowsy as other kinds (dramamine, etc).

Good luck!

Try Hydra or Spetses or even Poros islands. These are in the Argosaronikos gulf sea, just 1 hour or 2 the max from Athens by Flying high speed ferries. Hydra is excellent!
I would suggest you to travel to the North and visit Epirus region! Both mountains and sea shores - perfect sceneries, excellent accommodation facilities, perfect food .. practically everything. Ideal place for late September. Five hours driving from Athens to the North West. Visit Ioannina (capital of the region) and Parga (a city by the sea side - opposite to Corfu island). Besides, Greece is not just the islands !

p.s.: you will need a nice map - but don't be so scared about road signs ! Lately things are better !

Enjoy ur stay in Greece !

Like atzim wrote Greece isn't just the islands. We spent two great weeks cruising around by car - unforgettable. After couple of days I already learn some of their alphabet characters so I was able to "read" road signs... ;) I suggest you to travel around Peloponnese or at least its east part. If you are interested in ancient greek history you should go to Epidaurus (big amphitheatre), Mykenes (here are ruins of old city but I enjoyed still wet water cistern) and Old Corinth (on the hill - from the top you have nice view, you can see both Ionian and Aegean sea connected with artificial canal). Souther (almost on cape Maleas) there is a little cape Monemvasia called also the greek Gibraltar. I was there as well and I can say its really pretty similar (in Monemvasia there is just no monkeys) . Near Sparti there is one nice spot as well - Mystras. A lot of small churches on the way to the top of a hill...
If you decide for Ioannina located by the (dirty - it's a pity:() lake, you can visit small cave system in limestones with quite rich with stalactites and stalagmites.
Have a nice time in Greece.
