Hi There. Going to Thailand in 2 weeks time. I keep hearing the words "Khao San Road". Is this the main high street of Bangkok? A travellers / tourist spot? Why do I keep hearing bad (and good) reports i.e conflicting reports?

khao san road is not the main road in bangkok its just i guess what you would call a travellers getto. loads of western shops like burger king and even a starbucks.also its where the cheap hostels and bars are.
it may or may not be for you its a street that dosent really sleep so if thats what you want to do i wouldent go their. their are partys every night.
Khao San is a bizare place and a "travellers ghetto" doesn't even quite describe it. The ratio of travellers to locals is about 100 to 1 and sometime when you are there you wonder why (or if) you even left the West. But its a great place to introduce yourself to Asia and it's a place where you can arrange anything you want to do in Thailand. It's got great shopping, great nightlife, endless hotels and restarants, and it's pretty close to some of the main sights in Bangkok like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the river. It consists of one main street (Khao San) about 3 blocks long, a couple parralel streets, and a few offshooting streets at the end.
Most of the travellers that stay in the Khao San Road section of Bangkok tend to be young, not long out of school. More mature, "adult like" travellers seem to head to the Siam or Sukhumvit Road area where the transportation and nightlife is more convenient.
This doesn't mean that you won't find old farts in the Khao San Road area or kids in the Sukhumvit/Siam area just not so many of them.

I wonder why that is?
