Does anyone suggest getting any of the hostel discount cards like YHA, VIP or Nomads? Are they worth geeting or not? If yeh which ones are best?

For all of the following: many individual hostels are exceptions, and the people staying at a hostel at any particular time can have a huge influence on the atmosphere.

YHA hostels are generally speaking clean and quiet - with the smaller hostels good for a talk with strangers in the lounge, and the larger hostels seeming to be indifferent institutions (but still packed with all possible comfort and amenities). They're the most expensive hostel-chain, but give the largest discount, so that evens out.
VIP hostels are either really modern and packed with all the latest, or pretty rundown, and as a rule referred to as party hostels. Nomads hostels are "groovy" and alternative.

Get the card for whichever kind of hostel appeals most to you (start by sampling one or two of each if you're uncertain); they all earn themselves back in just 10-20 nights. Don't bother getting one card above another purely for the non-hostel discounts, as those all even out, and for example transport companies generally say "discount with any major backpacker card", not even bothering to list the options.

Personally I prefer a good night's rest, and so stuck to YHA. That said, I vastly preferred the YHAs down under to the ones in Europe, so where you go to can also matter a bit with that.

Also, if you are booking hostels online, Hostelworld have a discount "card" (actually they just send you a code) which you can use, and as it works for anything booked through hostelworld, it can be very good value and doesn't restrict you to certain types of hostels.

Bear in mind also that with YHA, many hostels either won't let you stay if you aren't a member (sometimes even in very quiet times) or charge you a large mark up as a non member, so if you might be staying at several YHA ones, its useful to have.

The hostelworld discount card is excellent value.
If going to NZ then you should try and get a BBH Card $40 but $20 of that is callcard.

The YHA hostels in NZ are in good condition but the YHA on the east coast of Oz are awful, they have just gone downhill.

Depends what your looking for though really.

Have an excellent time.
