in up north there are places like shimla , manali, gangtok, kalingpong,(all mountians and valleys.. very beautifull location) and in south you can go to kerela (famous for its backwaters , beachs , food)... and in west its the GOA(has one of the best beach's , best sea food and portugues architects). well you can visit mumbai( one of the fastest city best for everything that it has, must visit). delhi (capital of india. good food), agra(has the taj mahal). there are many many other places to go visit. oh i forgot to mention rajistan, bangalore, ooty, varanasi. well dont worry if you cant decide on where about to go .. i will help you out if you need. please feel free to pm me.. i will reply you back as soon as possible. by the way then are you guys planning to travel.

First stay in Delhi and make a daytrip to Agra for the Taj Mahal (2,5 hours by train from Delhi). If I were you I would skip the trip to kathmandu and instead going to Manali/Shimla in Himalach Pradesh (north of Delhi). I feel that Kathmandu is little out of the way (especially if you have only 30 days). After that move to Rajasthan. You should not miss this fantastic area...for me the real India. Especially Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. From Udaipur go to Mumbai. Enjoy this great enormous city. From there you can hit the beaches in Goa. You will find budget accomodation in India easily for well under 400 rupees for a doubleroom (see the lonely planet guidebook of India). Good luck and have fun in India.
