Slight side line to this question.. does anyone know of a phone account that you can set up before leaving where people can leave you messages and you pick up as you go?

Sorry not explaining myself very well. I'm not going to have a mobile, and will be doing the phonecards thing but want for family to be able to contact me say if there was an emergency etc, an account that allows me to check the voicemail?

Yeah, you can do this with the Ekit service. It should be possible to obtain an ekit card before you leave the UK, and they have "branded" cards that differing organisations sell (such as YHA, BUNAC, etc).

I have found that ekit cards can be, in some cases, more expensive to use for calling than phone cards you can get on the road, but the voicemail service on them can be very useful. Last I knew, you can also pick up any voicemails via the internet, which you don't have to pay for while listening to them.
