By a thousand miles I would say Cape Town. I find the Cape Peninsula more beautiful than anything I have seen at home in Europe (not to disparage Norway or Italy which I think are quite stunning) and the city is built ON the peninsula. It is quite astounding.

I also think the winelands near and in Cape Town are by far the most beautiful I have ever seen - certainly FAR more beautiful than California's Napa valley (though I do love many parts of California) and I believe it is more stunning than European ones.

Other nice cities: Stockholm, Rome, Venice, Florence, cities on the Amalfi coast (if you can count smaller places as cities), Rio and San Francisco. At home, perhaps York, Bath and Edinburgh?

But on a world stage, my vote is clearly for Cape Town - it is magnifient.

First league:

Lisbon, Riga, Antwerp, Oslo, Leuven, Barcelona, Aalesund, Istanbul, Venice

Interesting, but not extraordinarily beautiful:

Copenhagen, Madrid, Glasgow, Hanoi, Shanghai, Philadelphia, Sankt-Petersburg, Zurich, Brussels, Vienna

Worth visit at some point:

London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Vancouver, Budapest, Edinburgh, Prague, Hong Kong, Montreal.

Haven't been to Stockholm, San Fran, and Beijing which seem to get high marks above.

Don't know if I shall visit them ever, unless someone else pays and I have nothing else to do sometime in the future.

On the other hand, I would very much like, and do plan, to see: Tallinn, Helsinki, Calcutta, New Delhi, Melbourne, Sao Paolo (probably also Rio), and Montevideo-Buenos Aires meta-national conurbation.

Of those I have been to - Cape Town. Unquestionably.

Its physical setting is quite astonishing. Beaches with multiple mountains rising above them (and they are literally mountains! They are taller than the mountains in Snowdonia, and on the beach!) Cape Town's vibe is sooooo chilled, it offers so much to do nearby, it is wonderully diverse and its beaches (almost one hundred miles of them) are completely stunning.

As for the greater Cape Town area which takes in Chapman's peak, Simonstown, Cape Point, Noord hook (check spelling on that last one any South Africans?), Muizenberg etc etc, it is jaw droppingly beautiful! I agree with Ashesinurn - not only is it the most beautiful city I have seen, but it is the most beautiful PLACE I have been in my life (my personal 2nd place probably goes to Yosemite National Park California).

Wish I could go back! Oh for that wonderful African sun!

Quite remarkable! Confusingly beautiful!

In Central Europe Paris is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. Amazing architecture and there is so clean, dignified... You feel like someone special, when You stroll romantic lanes of Paris;)
In Eastern Europe Warsow and Cracow in Poland are the best - they have a specific climate and are worth-seeing. Also Lwów in Ukraine is beautiful city and You have an impression that time stopped there few years ago.
In South Europe I was in Greece and I can recommend Saloniki - very beautiful city, more beautiful than Athens I think...
And I would like to ask what places do you recommend in USA? I am going to visit this country this summer and spend 3 months there - which city is more exciting and interesting - New York or Chicago? This will be my first trip beyond Europe And I can't wait:)

In Poland I think the most beautiful city is Wroclaw, which has got a specific climate and great architecture and long history. In Wroclaw live a lot of fantastic peopole, for example students-they are very inteligent and friendly.I like Wroclaw the most because of Market Squere and Ostrow Tumski -small island in the middle of the city.I strongly recommend you WROCLAW:).I think that beautiful are Krakow and Warsow, too.I recommend you Prague in Czech Republik and Munich in Germany.

the most beautiful city depends of what you are looking for. For the architecture I will go for Paris. For the people sydney and the scenery I will say capetown. It´s just impossible to choose. The world is beautiful and the best country will be a mix of every country.
