Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you have ever contested an insurance settlement before. Ive just been notified of what my insurance company are offering me for my various South American mishaps, and Im less than happy with it. Am getting about half of what I had hoped, despite taking out special cover on a number of items.

This is the first time Ive claimed for anything whilst travelling, so Im not sure, do insurance companies always screw you over!??

Hi Ev,
I haven't personally had the need to, but a friend of mine did contest a settlement last year. He got almost double the original offer.
Put everything down in writing, and never mention the amout you want.
Just state that the amount offered is not satisfactory and does not reflect the loss and inconvienence suffered.
State that you hope that this matter can be braught to a conclusion as soon as possible to the satisfaction of both parties.
Hope it helps,

Hello Samsara2
This is the reason i never buy insurance for travel, except medical insurance. And i only take out medical insurance, if i am going to a country where medical help is so expensive, that it is unaffordable.

I recently made a claim and sent off all the paperwork and got a phone call within about 10 days to say they were just having some of it translated (police report in Spanish) and then they would be replacing the camera and accessories immediately. They were sympathetic and professional. In days I received another call to say it was all in order and they would replace the camera with the updated version if that was ok with me (yes thanks!) which was great as my version was still on the market but now worth much less than I'd paid since it had been superceded. So I thought it was worth getting insurance- I had taken out the cheapest i could find too.

I think you always have to exaggerate your claims a little in order to get what you want... However, I lost two cameras (one was brand new), one Ipod, $100, passport, a travel guidebook, by diary and much more on a bus in Ecuador, and my insurance company were really fast, and I got almost as much as wanted! So I must say I don't have any complaints. Except from losing all my stuff, of course...
