I'm planning to do a visa run next week because they hve risen the daily penalty to 500 Baht.
Whats the best way?
Is it still:bus to hat yai>bus to sungai kalok>walk the border>bus to kota baru>bus to kota besut?
Or is there some kind of a direct connection between Surat and Besut?
Any short and quick or stay and enjoyable alternatives in Myanmar or Cambodia?

If you want to go to the Perhentians you will need to use the route you mentioned.
If you only want to make a visa run. In & Out. Take the Bus from Haadyai to Padang Bezar, walk over the border, have a coffee and walk back over the border to Thailand. The Buses are all passing the Immigration.
From Haatyai are Express Buses leaving to all over Malaysia. Try to find out if there are Buses going to Kota Bahru.
Why not come to Langkawi for a few days? Bus to Haatyai and Bus to Satun. Tuk Tuk to Tammalang Pier. 1 Hour Ferry ride.

I prefere Perhantians over Langkawi though.
I might pass through Satun on my back trip, because there is supposed to be a major party in Taruntao.
