Hay guys,

there is a group of 7 of us taking advantage of Lidl's great flights deal with Air Berlin (£19 each way), and after deciding against Barcalona and Milan we've decided to spend 5 days either either side of New Year in Berlin.

We have heard that the old east of the city has the best underground clubs etc. We are all dance music lovers. Do you think it'd be best to stay in the East? We will be hostelling it with a budget of about £10 per night. I've seen one hostel near Zoo station for £7 per night. I've seen Cristianna F Vir Kinder Von Bahnhoff (sp - sorry) Zoo, which doesnt give that place a good name! is it still that minging around there?

any advice on things to see, places to stay and clubs to rave the night away in will be greatly appriciated! i havent been to Berlin since the wall came down.

Cheers, Simon.

They cleaned up the area around Zoo a lot. Yet it is like all train stations all over Germany the hangout of junkies and wino's. I guess the worst that can happen to you there is that you have your wallet stolen or have some punk persistently begging you for money. (Offer to buy them food and drink or give them vouchers but never any money.)

The AO hostel near Zoo seems to be ok from what I saw from the lobby.

FYI, Berlin is very spread out, it has several areas with local hotspots. As transport is very good, it doesn't really matter where you base yourself as long as it is within Zone A and close to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station.

As I don't go clubbing, I don't really know anything about the party scene. I guess what you heard about the clubs is right.

As for acco, I personally liked the Meininger Hostel, as it had good connections to Potsdamer Platz as well as Zoo. They have large and bright rooms holding up to 10 people with decent bathrooms, beds, wardrobes and tables. Downside is that after 10 am people come in to clean and they make noise in the process. They will have no restraint in kicking you out.

t_maia is right it doesn't really matter where you stay in the city as public transport is excellent and even at night you get around without any problems. I personally also consider Berlin to be a fairly safe city, so if you use common sense like anywhere else, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Hostels, I have heard good things about are Eastseven and Circus, both situated in pretty cool areas in Eastern Berlin. Google them to find more info.

Concerning clubbing, your best bet is to buy one of the city magazines Zitty or Tip as soon as you get to Berlin at any newsagent, to find out what's on and where to go. You generally will have a good night and dance at Watergate or Cafe Moskau though ;).

Have fun in Berlin and if you need any more specific info, I'm happy to help.

hey simone,

just keep in mind, that the clubs the others recommend are very fantastic, but also quite expensive on NYE.

also, if you are 7 guys, you might not be able to get into these clubs, so make sure, that you split the group and make some friends with girls waiting in line as well. watergate, weekend and panorama bar will not let you enter as a group of 7 guys....

how about ( and i know i keep recommending it......) a organised pub crawl? you could party there, make friends with some girls and then head to any of the clubs....

chekc out and have fun!!!

my favourite hostel in berlin is the city stay in the city centre ("Mitte") but it might be a bit more expensive than the a&o at zoo...
