Hi everyone,

If you had limited time and had to pick between the two (Hampi or Ajanta Caves)which would you choose?

Also how long would you recommend spending at each place?

We would travel to Hampi from Goa or Ajanta from Mumbai.

I can't give an exact opinion because as of yet I haven't been to Hampi but I have been to Ellora & Ajanta caves, for both trips we used one of the tours in the book and the Ellora one was really good but the Ajanta one was a nightmare because we were promised a guide who didnt exist! There was one guide talking people around the caves but most of the Indians wouldnt shut up so you couldnt hear what they were saying... there were 5 westerners on the trip & we ended up using the LP guide book & did them in reverse and then all went out for a meal at night once we had got back to Arungabad!
Both trips took up the best part of a day each and were worth it in my opinion although the caves are similar to Elephanta Island in Mumbai so if you want the best of both worlds then maybe Hampi would be the best option...

Whilst at Arungabad we also hired a car & driver to take us to the Lonar Crater, read about it in LP... it was pretty amazing, its so huge! It took us 5hrs each way though & we had to set off rather early to make it in one day....

Hampi is meant to be great although take plenty of mozzie repellent from what I have been told... its on my to do list for when i go back later in the year...

hope thats of some help to you

I've never been to Ajanta, but Hampi is not to be missed. It was fantastic and one of my highlights of India.
I would spend 3 days there if you can. You can see the sights themselves in one very long day of sightseeing, but it's also a great town to hang out in and you should give yourself a day or two to relax, hang out on the river, do some biking around the area, and watch life go by.

Hi Erin,
I haven;t done the caves, but like the last reply, would highly recommend Hampi definately. I was there for the Holi festival in March this year, and was by far my best day in India!
I would, however, steer clear of the overnight 'coach'(using the term loosely) from Panaji in Goa, as it was by far the worst bus ride i took in India, 14 hrs of hell for way too much rupee. Try a train that goes from goa (can't remeber where sorry) to Hospet and then a short taxi/rickshaw ride into Hampi.

A beautiful town, 2-4 days should cover it :)
