My boyfriend and I are planning to go to Nepal for three months, two of which we plan on hiking the Annapurna circuit and Everest Base Camp with a guide and possibly a porter.

With the vase amount of websites and trekking companies on the web, we find it very hard to narrow down the choices.

Can someone offer some tips and suggestions on finding a good guides and porters? (i.e. recommedations of guides from previous trips and things to look for in a guide)

Thanks! Jenn

Hi !
You do have the time at hand. As it goes in the mountains - so is it with life - Dont hurry things.
Dont book with agencies on the net - they may - or may not be what you expected. For the Annapurna Circuit - You look for Guides and Porters at Pokhra (You dont really need Guides here). Look around Pokhra and you will find plenty of interesting people / guides / porters / agencies willing to help rether than trying to make a fast buck.
For the Everest trek, I would again suggest to wait till the last moment before you make a selection. Fly to Lukla from Katmandu and you will probably find a number of persons in the flight itself who will be forthcoming with brilliant suggestions. You will get good porters at Lukla itself.

So, in my opinion, since the nepalese in the villages are gentle and hospitable by nature, pick your porters from among them. If you hire from the City, the owner will take most of the money and the porters are poorly paid by the agencies.

So Enjoy yourselves and have a fantastic time.
Do remember to post your experiences - they will be helpful for those who follow.
