Well, to lip read you first need to know the language that is spoken!

You would be better of to learn a foreign sign language or a foreign sign alphabet, this way you could actually communicate with other deaf people in this country.

If the verbal language you know best is English, you are well off anyway. You could communicate in a lot of countries by writing on a slip of paper what you want.

The point where hearing people can actually best relate to being deaf is when they are in a foreign country where very few people speak a language they understand. They can hear the sounds, but they cannot understand. It is similar to being deaf, as the end result (not understanding) is the same. So you would be on a similar level if you travel. You have probably seen so called world-wide dictionaries, where everything you need to say is printed into the book in symbols. It is the closest thing to sign language there is, and you could use it without any problem.
