hi all,

I'll be in Siem Reap from 22-24 Dec. I'll be alone after 24 Dec morning where my humanitarian project mates will be leaving back for Singapore. My other friends will be joining me in Ho Chi Minh City on 25 Dec afternoon.

I am just wondering what is the best way to travel direct from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City. I heard that there is bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and there is a bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. But i would like to spend my X'mas eve in a peaceful and safe pub with other fellow backpackers.

Can anyone provide me some info on the bus timings of (Siem Reap to Phnom Penh) and (Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh)? And the location to board the bus. I can leave Siem Reap on 23 Dec 06 evening too. Any cheap flights details?

If any lone backpacker is interested in spending X'Mas eve in Ho Chi Minh City, -snip-
Thank you all for your time.

Koon Po

HI Koon Po,

Not sure about bus times but I think if you travel to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap by bus you wont be able to catch the bus to Ho Chi Minh until the next day. When I did this journey I think the bus left at 8am or 9am. I got the bus straight from the guesthouse I was staying at which was Okay Guesthouse - I'd thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay. Loads of backpackers and real friendly staff. I met loads of travellers by booking through this guesthouse that I continued travelling with through Vietnam and then again in Laos. You'll also find very friendly and safe pubs to drink in with fellow backpackers around Phnom Penh. I think the bus to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap also leaves early morning.

The bus is a great and safe way to travel - take the government buses - but a wee warning for your arrival in Phnom Penh: you will get mobbed by touts when you get off the bus. They are friendly and some told me they do just for fun aswell as to get customers and it is very funny but be adamant on where you want to go - don't let them push you into staying somewhere you don't want to! My friend just put his head down and looked grumpy and they left him alone

I would recommend staying in Phnom Penh rather than skipping it on your way to Ho Chi Minh - it's a great city with a busy vibe to it.

Hope this helps!

Mekong Express bus from PP to Ho Chi Minh leaves PP at 06:30. It takes around 6 hours and costs US$12

=> Overnight in PP
