Since I doubt I'm the only one to get these, I'm wondering how all of you handle the ever increasing amount of photo usage requests, and what you think about them.

What I'm talking about is getting a private message - or sometimes email - from someone working at an advertising company somewhere in the world, saying that they saw and liked one of your pictures and would like permission to use it for some specific purpose, and would you please just give this to them (for free, although they never say this, just imply that that's the natural thing to do), and then if you really wanted to they might even give you a photographer's credit for it.

"Flickr raiders" is what they're starting to be called, but it works here on travellerspoint just as much as on flickr - these people are too cheap even to go with a microstock agency (or know that everyone is using the same handful of decent shots from there already), so looking for some original photography, they hope that people don't realize the value of their photos and will just give them away for free, for the 'honor' of being credited. (Meanwhile they'll almost certainly still charge their clients hundred of dollars for "stock photography licensing".)

I always very politely reply to these people (about once a month here at travellerspoint) that I don't give away my images for free, as I feel it devalues them, but that if they have budget, I'll happily license them at industry standard rates.
Somehow I never get a reply back...

So, I'm wondering how all of you treat this? Is anyone taking the standpoint that getting your name out is worth it? Do you just ignore these obvious "raiders"? Are you ever actually getting anyone to license from you for real money? Inquiring minds want to know! :)

We occassionally get requests from people asking if they can use the photos on this site. I usually tell them to contact the individual photographers, because naturally we don't have the right to give that permission.

I've actually had one of my photos used on a website as well - after they paid me a licensing fee of course ;)
