Hi Dave - We did a 2 day tour of Fraser Island with the Fraser Island Adventure Company. It was OK. The tour was reasonably well run and the guides were knowledgeable enough. There are some really interesting things to see on Fraser Island (I particularly liked the lakes), put I yearned for a bit more independence - with hindsight I would rather have hired a 4WD.

Definately spend 3 days here. If you are traveling with at least one other person you should rent your own 4X4 and cruise the island. We used Aussie Trax and they were great. There is no need to join a tour, its nice to have freedom to explore and it easy to get around. There are some places that get a little difficult driving but you should fine. You can either stay in hotel or rent camping equipment. Whatever suits your needs. Go and I promise you won't be dissipointed.

Whatever you do, don't go with a self drive group it's scary. Some of them are like 10 year olds behind wheels. Excellent place to see though, Just try and do it yourself with some pals. Enjoy

Hey Dave, I loved fraser much that i did it twice! the first time i went with Beaches backpackers, which i booked in Airlie Beach but the hostel for the trip was in Hervey Bay. Had an amazing trip and the good thing with Beaches is they have a base camp, so u can shower and have somewhere to cook and stuff.
The second time i went i went from Rainbow Beach with Koalas backpackers which i booked through peter pans and they did a great deal for fraser and the whitsundays! This one was roughing it a bit more, no base camp, no toilets and no showers! But it was amazing! i was in a group of 11 and we all took it in turns to drive, its a little scary but as long as u go careful your fine. All the group met up at night and set up camp in the same spot by the beach so the nights were full of parties! I definatley reccomend it, and my suggestion is do a self drive. Also if you go from rainbow beach you can go kayaking with dolphins if you get there a day early and that was amazing! hope this helps...

Hi sorry to kind of hijack into this thread but along with what has been said I was wondering are there any hostels on fraser island or do you have to camp out?

Fraser Island is a complete MUST!! I did it with a company called Dingo's, it was a 3 day 2 night self drive safari thingy, i was travelling alone, as were most of the other 10 people i got put with and it was the best laugh ever! (Hmm, 11 strangers, an island surrounded by sharks, inhabited by Dingo's, and fueled with ALOT of goon - fun anyone?!?) I think it cost around $250 including all meals etc etc. I think there is hostel's etc on the island but the best way to explore it is to sleep under the stars and surrounded by Dingo's - just make sure when nature calls you go in groups!
