Hi all

I'm planning to go travelling next year in September for a year (or more if possible). Its me and my girlfriend going and we are intending to do Fiji, NZ, OZ, Signapore, Borneo, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Japan. Possibly Laos if the mood and the time allows us.

We were aiming to take a minimum of £6000 each for everything. Tickets etc would be on top of that. We want to do a bit of adventure activities, sky diving, learning to dive, etc etc etc pretty much whatever we can find.

However we went in to STA Travel over the weekend to equire about everything and we were advised to budget for £15 accomodation a night, which works out at £5475 for the year!!! Do we really need to budget this much for accomodation? I know it Thailand etc its a lot cheaper, i.e. £2 per night tops. But will OZ NZ, Japan honestly be more then £15 per night each a lot of the time?

If we budget that much for accomodation then we will be saving forever to go away!

Any advice?

£15 per night is over budget for NZ and OZ, if you are going to stay in hostels. in both countries you should get a dorm room for around $20-25 (expect to pay a little more than this if you want a double room).

Japan is more expensive; I was there a few years ago and can't remember exactly how much hostels were, but I think you would be looking at at least £15 per night for a dorm room. Some hostels i stayed in in Japan included breakfast in the price though.

In South East Asia expect to pay around £4 for a basic double with shared bathroom or £6-£10 per night (per couple) for a decent enough double room with en suite bathroom. Singapore is slightly more costly. You can get rooms for £2 in Thailand, but this would be very basic. You'll get a lot more for your money in Vietnam than other places - some of the rooms we stayed in for £6 per night were outstanding value.

I was in Asia during low season so I 'm not sure how much prices would change during the peak season.

In Fiji I did a package with awesome adventures - this is quite a popular way to do it & I've included the link so you can get an idea of prices:

I spent 3 months travelling around Oz and spent just under £4000, just to give you an idea. This included 2 internal flights with virgin blue. As i was travelling alone I did alot of group tours which probably pushed the price up a little.

Hope all this helps. send me a personal message if you want some more info - I've just spent 21 months in oz, nz and SE asia so am happy to give you some more info if you like.

well,i think it is ok.cuz i know some hotels that charge $80 a nite in Africa.15 is good,if u think it's too much, then probably u will have to reduce the duration of ur stay.
