You should be able to see the main sights if you spend a couple of weeks in each country. In Laos don't miss Luang Prabang, and Vang Vieng if you like outdoor activities. The capital Vientiane is worth 2-3 days to explore the sights. The 2 day slow boat from the Thai border at Huay Xai down to Luang Prabang is a nice way to travel if you are coming from this direction. In Myanmar spend a couple of days in Yangon seeing the sights, Shwedagon Paya being the main attraction which is well worth a day time and a night time visit. Mandalay (and surrounding ancient cities), Bagan and Inle Lake are the popular places to visit. (I did these 4 places in 10 days but it was tight). Bus journeys take a long time in Myanmar so if your budget will stretch it's worth getting an internal flight at some point to save you time. I flew from Bagan to Yangon with Air Bagan which is a new private airline (the government airline Myanmar airlines is not recommended, partly because you'll be giving money to the govermnent but also because of its questionable safety record). The slowboat from Mandalay to Bagan is a good way to travel between these 2 places.

Bex was right about the big 4 as far as tourist must see spots in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and the Inley lake areas. Be advised though that the summer months of June, July and August are also the middle of the monsoon season in Myanmar and in general the further north you go the less rain there will be. I was in Mandalay in early October and parts of the city still had street flooding and it made for some messy slogging when you got off the beaten path. You shouldn't be bothered by any crowds at that time of year though so it does have its upside. You should be able to get some good deals at hotels and in the markets then also. Its a very interesting place to visit so have fun and stay dry.

So much to see in both countries. If you have only a month, I'd suggest 10 days in Laos and about 20 days in Myanmar.
Depending upon the time you travel, you may find discounts on both air tickets and hotel rooms in Myanmar. I was there in September this year and everything was much cheaper than it had been during a previous visit in January.
As suggested already, Luang Prabang is a MUST in Laos. Take the bus down Highway 13 (great mountain scenery) and stop in Vang Vieng for a day or two, and then continue to Vientiane. Not a lot to see there (and it's the sleepiest country capital you'll ever visit) but the cheap and excellent restaurants are worth hanging around for.
In Myanmar, besides Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and the Inle Lake area, there are other great places to see; Bago and Golden Rock (both near Yangon), Mount Popa (near Bagan), hill tribe trekking in the Kalaw/Inle area, more mountain villages in around Kengtung, hill station and mountain scenery near Pyin U Lwin and Hsipaw. Myanmar is still an undiscovered gem for most travelers. Very friendly and very inexpensive.
